Here is a piece 21 inches long. This is unusual for a screw machine operation, but our Swiss Machines could make a part like this one up to 138 inches in length. The piece below, for example, has only .955" of machining, including the threaded area, the shoulder, the taper, and the radius at the opposite end. These length capacities are what we mean by "the long of it."
Another feature about this job is quantity, only 1,600 pieces per order. We run many other jobs where the quantities are as low as 100 or 200 pieces. And lead times are always kept within reason at PMC. Normal lead time to tool up this job, run blanks from ground stock, perform all the secondary operations, and ship the parts, would be six weeks. On an emergency basis, this can all be completed in 2-3 weeks. That's what we mean by "the short of it."
